Dominik Nitsche: $10 Million First Place in Main Event is Horrible Idea for Poker

Dominik Nitsche has been having a great Series so far, claiming two bracelets during this summer, bringing his total count to three. Our own Laura caught up with him as he was waiting for Day 1C of the Main Event to start.

That just means they gonna screw the payouts in the way where it is just completely ridiculous, because they always do that… It’s not exactly player friendly and I don’t have anything good to say about that… I think it’s a horrible idea for poker.

Although Nitsche is obviously playing in the Main, he was not that excited about the whole concept of winner being awarded $10 million. He explains how it is not possible to do it without seriously screwing the payouts, and forcing people to play heads-up for close to $5 million. The official numbers for the Main Event have been released recently, and Nitsche’s predictions turned out to be true, as the difference between the first and second place is in the vicinity of $4.9 million!

Unless you are a really bad player, you should probably be making it through Day 1. That being said, last year when I played I was down to 3k chips at the first break so I’m probably going to have to eat my own words tomorrow

Nitsche also shared some of his thoughts and tips on how to get through the first day. With the deep structure, it is hard to run out of chips during the first five levels. Getting through to Day 2, however, should not be the main goal, as making the money is the real priority. And if you really just want to make it to Day 2, there is a first class pro-tip in there: just sit out and you will have some chips left to come back to when the day is over.
