Although he once advised poker pro wannabes to pursue a different line of work, there is apparently no turning back - nor will there be any career changes - for Dutch Boyd.
As a matter of fact, Boyd ensconced himself further into the poker world by jumping onto the poker vlogging bandwagon. The three-time WSOP champ recently released his first poker vlog.
His YouTube channel is populated with a bunch of videos, but this is Boyd's maiden voyage in the vlog category made popular by the likes of Andrew Neeme, Jeff 'Boski' Sluzinski, and The Trooper. From the looks of Dutch's initial effort, vlog lovers may soon have another popular poker vlogger to watch.
Poker Preferred Over Partying
After giving viewers an awesome look at a bunch of Las Vegas casinos, Boyd admits to aiming for a deep run in a $400 MTT at the Venetian in order to avoid attending a birthday party the same evening. It seems his eardrums were in need of a respite from the incessant loud music he expected at the celebration and that motivation was able to propel him toward bubble territory in the tournament.
Reaching the dinner break in good stead chip-wise meant that he wouldn't have to attend the birthday party with his girlfriend. And Boyd was doing all the right things on his way to a payday, including eating properly - which he insists is a major priority when it comes to success in poker tournaments.
After Dinner Open Seat Syndrome
Citing statistics of mental capacity being reduced by some 20% after a big meal, Dutch chose a chicken caesar salad and had thoughts of even doing without the chicken. His years of playing poker have resulted in countless memories of players hitting the rail not long after eating a large dinner, a situation he was aiming to avoid.
Although eating light may keep your mind right, running into pocket aces can change your mindset in a hurry. Especially when you're holding pocket kings and have called the all-in shove of the opponent fortunate enough to be blessed with those bullets with one more elimination to go before the bubble burst.
Bubble Boy Boyd
Boyd ended up as "the stone cold bubble boy," missing an opportunity to cash and at least double his buy-in. Adding insult to injury, he turned down an offer for a bubble save just prior to being knocked out, preferring his chances of making a deep run considering the number of players who were short-stacked.
Was it karma that Dutch was the player to miss out on finishing in the money after using his right to veto a bubble save deal? Did his encounter with an annoying William Vo seated to his right somehow figure into the entire debacle?
Watch Boyd's first ever poker vlog for the answers, including his opinion on deal-making during tournaments. Dutch has strong beliefs on the topic, and I must say, some pretty valid arguments that take into account the more inexperienced and casual players.
As an added bonus, check out the video below where Boyd wins his third WSOP gold bracelet.
