In 2004 Clinton Portis had the world at his feet, the running back signed by the Washington Redskins on an 8-year, $50million contract – a decade later he was retired from the game, mired in debt and passing bouncing checks in an attempt to pay off his gambling debts, this week agreeing to settle the $190,000 he owes to the Borgata Casino.

36-year old Portis saw his reputed $43million fortune dwindle through bad investments and being ripped off by his managers for $millions, admitting last year that he had contemplated murder.

Sports Illustrated last year published a story in which ‘Portis recounted a night four years ago in which he sat in a car outside a building, holding a gun and awaiting one of the managers he felt had ruined him financially’.

The record-breaking running back explaining:

"It wasn't no beat up. It was kill," admitting that if a friend hadn’t somehow talked him out of it, "We'd probably be doing this interview from prison."

Portis ran up debts at both the Borgata and the MGM Grand, this week reaching a deal to repay the former $190,000 in monthly instalments of 10 percent of “all gross income in excess of $30,000” between now and August 2021, according to court documents.

Portis, who claimed at one point he had only $150 in his bank account following his disastrous business ventures, also owes the MGM Grand Casino over $278,000 – the casino suing him in 2014 and the case still unresolved.

The Redskins hero, who retired in 2012 and filed for bankruptcy in 2015, tried to pay off his gambling debts using personal checks – the Borgata suing him after they bounced, claiming he knew he didn’t have the funds to cover them.

Surviving on a $2500 monthly NFL pension and roughly $1000 in other income, Porter was one of the hosts of this February’s JBF Celebrity Poker Tournament

…although his massive gambling debts are not believed to be poker-related.
