One of Argentina’s greatest ever football stars, Sergio Aguero, has been making an appearance at the WSOP Paradise in the Main Event. The former Manchester City striker has fallen in love with the game since his retirement from football on medical grounds and can’t get enough right now.

Phil Hellmuth took time to walk over to greet Aguero who now has a career record of $94,426.

After a couple of cashes in minor events at the Enjoy Poker Tour series in Punta Del Este, he cashed for $88,506 after finishing in 19th place in the $50,000 High Roller at the 2023 WSOP.

Not a bad start considering some of the players who he has come up against so far, although that amount likely doesn’t even match two day’s wages from his footballing days.

Sergio Aguero is far from the only big name from football making the move over to poker. His former Barcelona FC teammate Gerard Pique is another who spends many an hour at the felt.

Pique has been a semi-regular at the European Poker Tour for a few years now, registering his first cash back in 2011.

PokerStars ambassador Alejandro 'Papo MC' Lococo told reporters:

"I think there's a lot of football players here in Europe and a lot of them used to play here, like Pique, like Kun [Sergio Aguero], like Neymar. So I think they like Barcelona and it's a good excuse for coming to play."

He has also struck up a friendship with Sergio Aguero through poker.

"It was funny, we didn't meet at the poker table but I think I played that tournament because of him,. He said 'hey, let's go to play the 50k' and I normally play a little bit slower - not low stakes, but I used to play 10k, 25k, so 50k is another level for me."

"But I said ok, let's have a taste if he's saying go to play. And it was perfect, because he made the money and I made the money, we had fun, it was nice."

And then there is Neymar. The Brazilian superstar, still the world’s most expensive footballer, probably plays more than any of them.
