“Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated”, is how the legendary writer Mark Twain is reputed to have responded to newspaper reports of his demise, and so it seems with poker - the Grosvenor Goliath 2017 series smashing its record number of players at a time when poker is supposedly in its death throes!

Online we’ve had the Global Poker OWC and the new Far eastern sites all showing great results, and the recent WSOP proved that even big buy-ins are no deterrent to the hundreds of thousands of poker players worldwide. It may not be a boom, but only booms are booms, as anyone in any business or economy anywhere will tell you.

And so to the Goliath, and the biggest number of unique entries outside of the US for the Main Event, held in the Grosvenor Casino in Coventry this past week.

The £250,000 guaranteed tournament with a buy-in of £120 has been going from strength-to-strength as the numbers above show, and the following photo tweeted by the Goliath crew shows what bust-outs look like in paper form

When the Grosvenor team made the record-breaking announcement to much applause live in the casino during play on starting day 1e, there were still 2 full day 1’s to go before the final total would be known and it proved to be a fun time for all between the serious stuff of registering and playing, with Will ‘9 high like a boss’ Kassouf showing he’s fair game when it comes to being on the receiving end of some magical humour…

Running and promoting an event of this size is never going to be easy, but the Grosvenor Casino has pulled out all the stops – perhaps part of the reason their numbers have shot through the roof, offering poker players more than just a table, cards and sullen faces all round…

All the action, including Live streams and chip updates can be found on their excellent Twitter feed here, and if they keep up the great work it may not be such a long time until rumours of poker’s death disappear for good.
