Leung Cheung Wins the GUKPT Leeds Main Event For £37,900

It was a classic countdown victory for local Leeds poker player Leung Cheung as he topped off an incredible GUKPT week by taking down the Main Event for £37,900, having secured 3rd and then 2nd in side events in the run-up to the festival biggie.
The 7th leg of this season’s Grosvenor UK Poker Tour was hosted in Leeds, and the Main Event finale attracted a big field, 308 entries in the £500 buy-in tournament vying for a share of the £154,000 prizepool – among the them the ‘infamous’ William Kassouf, seemingly as happy playing huge Vegas tournaments as he is in smaller events in his native England…
For a while in Leeds it looked as though Renee Xie would become the first-ever female winner of a GUKPT Main Event, the Londoner having over £200,000 in tournament winnings to her name prior to her deep run this weekend topped by a £15,230 ($22,148) for winning the Grosvenor 25/25 Main Event last June.
With a live stream on YouTube and Joe Beevers part of the commentary team, fans were able to watch as the final table fought it out for the title, one notable being Chris Pawson who had made it to the Main Event on the back of a £4 satellite, his buy-in returned more than 1000-fold as he picked up £4300 for his eventual 7th spot finish.
Renee Xie had been bossing the table with her big stack for quite some time, but when Leung Cheung’s pocket fours flopped a set to dispose of Ken Lockey with pocket kings, the Leeds player had a 3:2 chip lead going into heads-up, prompting a deal which saw Xie take £33,000 and Leung settle for £35,000, the two players playing for the remaining £3,000 and the trophy.
The final hand was a sweet ending for Cheung, the Gukpt.com blog describing it:
