Online poker and gambling continues to evolve in New Jersey as the Golden Nugget Casino has rolled out a poker-themed game featuring a live dealer.

Casino Hold'em, including the live dealer feature, was launched last month to online players located within the Garden State. The game is available from 3:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. daily.

“Being the first to offer a Live Dealer version of the world’s most popular poker game in America, Casino Hold’em, shows our commitment to delivering on an innovative and world-class product to our patrons,” the casino's senior VP and general manager of online gaming, Thomas Winter, told the Press of Atlantic City.

How Its Played

Casino Hold'em differs from conventional Texas Hold'em in that players are competing against the house and not against each other. The rules and structure of the game are also different, requiring an ante and only one round of betting post-flop in which players either call or fold.

A call requires a bet of twice the ante amount, while a fold allows the dealer to scoop your ante and end the hand. However, players can win more by making certain top hands. For instance, a flush pays out 2-1, a full house 3-1, and you'll get 10-1 for hitting quads.

Europeans Love It

Live dealer casino games for online players have been around for awhile, with blackjack, roulette, and baccarat among the offerings available. The format is more prevalent in European countries that have not enacted laws that stifle online poker and gambling, as has been done in the U.S.

New Jersey remains one of only three states to offer regulated online gambling, with Pennsylvania set to become no. 4 after legislation was passed in 2017.

Online players may favor live dealer action for a number of reasons, one of which is added confidence that the games are not rigged. Another is the ability to chat and engage with dealers (and sometimes other players), as the social component to online gambling falls far below that of being physically seated in a casino or poker room.
