According to a recent Oxford Economics research, paid by American Gaming Association, named “Impacts of Commercial Casino Industry in Michigan”, Michigan generated nearly $2.8 billion from the economic impact of commercial casinos and created more than 17,000 spin-off and direct jobs in 2013. Michigan also generates $730 million in tax revenues to local, state and federal governments which would cover the starting salaries of more than 20,000 state school teachers.

According to the study, without the casino industry’s total employment impact of approximately 17,000 jobs, the unemployment rate in Michigan would rise from 7.2% to 8.2%. The report states:

Commercial casino industry in Michigan supports one out of every 239 jobs statewide and in addition to approximately 8,800 direct jobs, the commercial casino industry generated 3,400 indirect jobs and 5,100 induced jobs, resulting in a total job impact of approximately 17,000 total jobs throughout Michigan.

Michigan is home to 26 casinos including three state regulated casinos in Detroit and 23 tribal casinos owned by Indian tribes.

The three casinos in Detroit stem from a November 1996 vote in which Michigan voters approved Proposal E, authorizing three licensed casinos to be built in Detroit. Proposal E was later revised and signed into law as the Michigan Gaming Control & Revenue Act www.americangaming.org.;

In November 2014 Detroit reported total revenue of more than $1.2 billion and generated state wagering taxes of $98.3 million. Geoff Freeman, the president and the CEO of the American Gaming Association, said that gaming is driving big results in Michigan and that their future success depends on strong partnership with policymakers that allow them to innovate, reinvest and create more jobs.

According to a study by Oxford Economics, released in November, casino gaming in the United States is a $240 billion industry that supports 1.7 million jobs and generates $38 billion in federal, state and local taxes. Research revealed that the casinos are one of the largest recreational employers in America, employing more workers than the airline industry or all spectator sports. The gaming industry supports more than 1.7 million jobs throughout the economy. These jobs provide $73.5 billion in income for American workers and their families.

The report about casino industry in Michigan elaborates: “Without Commercial casino’s tax impact of approximately $730 million in total tax revenues, households on average would pay an additional $188 in taxes each year.” The report shows that the casino industry is, in fact, good for Michigan even though many people are quick to criticize the casino industry in general.
