A poker player has been caught faking a cancer diagnosis on Twitter to take advantage of a staking offer from ACR boss Phil Nagy. This has turned out to be one of the most distasteful episodes on poker Twitter recently, souring what was a heartfelt gesture.

Charitable

Out of the blue, Phil Nagy tweeted that he was ready to stake six lucky players into the $5,000,000 GTD Venom PKO. This event has a $2,650 buy-in, so is not a tournament that many players can usually afford to play.

The deal was a profit split of 50% for the player and 50% going towards a breast cancer charity. All the prospective participants had to do was tweet a video of themselves telling a reason why it should be they who get the stake.

Even with this being poker, many of us still expected that the fact it was a gesture to breast cancer awareness would mean the scammers would stay clear. Sadly not.

A poster going by the name Christopher Moore decided to post a doctor’s letter purporting to be informing him of a positive cancer diagnosis. The original tweets calling him out have now been deleted but Chris Moneymaker reposted the letter.

It’s obvious to anybody reading the letter that the writer has made multiple mistakes with grammar and style, far worse than what any graduate from a medical school would ever make.

Moneymaker wrote that Moore had previously sent death threats to Phil Nagy and most of the ACR pros after being called out.

But rather than get carried away he offered financial assistance for some form of mental counselling, confirming that he was serious about helping the disturbed guy.

As if this wasn’t all weird enough, Moore then ignored the fact he sent death threats and threatened Moneymaker with legal action for posting his address on Twitter.

As said above, it’s a real shame that when we see such generosity in poker somebody has to come along and ruin the day.
