England’s Toby Lewis was the last man standing in Melbourne’s Crown Casino yesterday as he took down the Aussie Millions Main Event for a lifetime best score of $1,178,512 (AUD$1,458,198) and the ANTON Championship bracelet.

A record-breaking field of 800 had assembled to battle it out over five days for a prizefund which stood at a nice round AUD$8million (US$6.345million) and attracted players from all over the globe.

Colourful

Six different nationalities were represented once play got down to the final table of seven yesterday, Jason ‘jcarverpoker’ Somerville bringing fans of the game his usual blend of enjoyable and informative commentary on the RUI livestream, accompanied by some other stars of the game…

First to hit the rail was Belgium’s Johan Schumacher, his glorious technicolor dream-shirt no help as nothing went right in the first few hands of play and eventually his short-stack was flushed down the river to end his dreams, although there was a healthy payday as compensation.

Park Run

When Richardson walked into pocket kings and Mike Del Vecchio failed to fill his flush, we were 100 hands into the final table and down to four, Chul Hyon Park by far the least experienced of the bunch – accidentally folding at one point in the big blind as the pressure mounted, and unlucky not to double up as the following unusual hand provided by the PokerNews live updates shows…

‘Lewis made it 350,000 under the gun with 2♣ 2♥, Park committed his last 1,205,000 with J♠ J♣ and Lewis put the few extra chips in. The board ran out K♥ A♦ K♠ A♥ Q♦ for an improbable split pot and the two took their stacks back.’

When Park finally fell – having gamely fought back from the brink – it was another somewhat unlucky break for the amateur, his pocket queens well ahead of Espen Solaas’ sevens, although the 456 flop gave the Norwegian hope, and the turn producing another 7 to end Park’s incredible run in 4th but a US$379,853 payday for the satellite-winning entrant.

Deal or no deal?

With a massive amount of money on the line, the remaining three held talks about a deal and eventually decided to split it three ways – leaving AUD$75K and the bracelet to play for, Solaas dropping out when he ran into Lewis’ pocket kings and Swiss pro Huber falling at the final hurdle, running his top two pair with ace kicker into the Englishman’s flopped set of queens, and that was that.
