The poker community is in mourning today as it was learned that Chad 'iliholdem954' Batista, one of the earliest stars of online poker, met an untimely death yesterday at the young age of 35.
Batista, who also played under the 'M8kingmoves' moniker, was a feared and respected pro in the online realm, combining an aggressive style with an uncanny playing instinct for well over a decade. The cause of death has not been revealed, but his family did issue a statement.
"It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved son, nephew, cousin, brother and friend, Chad 'lilholdem954' Batista. Chad died suddenly this beautiful Thursday afternoon with his family surrounding him. We ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time and we thank you for your prayers."
In addition to his online poker prowess, Batista also racked up almost $1 million in live tournament winnings. His most lucrative cash on the live felt came nine years ago when he claimed the title in a $5,150 WSOP Circuit event in Indiana for $262,002, according to the Hendon Mob.
Batista made a WSOP final table the following year in 2007, landing in 5th place in $1,000 NLHE for $129,064. His most recent cash was earned in a Heartland Poker Tour Main Event last year - a 36th place finish for $3,896.
For almost a full year in 2007-08, PocketFives ranked Batista as the top online tournament player in the world. RIP 'lilholdem954.'
