San Diego-born John Monnette is widely regarded as one of the most talented mixed-game specialists in poker today. He began his career by playing limit Hold’em in 2002, but quickly grew tired of playing the same format over and over. In an interview with ESPN in 2012, he explained, ‘there were so many other games out there I wanted to learn . . . I just wanted to figure [them all] out’. Fifteen years on, and Monnette has one of the most decorated résumés in the world of mixed-game poker – now a three-time WSOP bracelet winner.

The first of these came in 2011, when John took down the $2,500 8-Game event for $278,144. Amongst the field was all-time great John Juanda and Ukrainian poker star Eugene Katchalov – both of which Monnette cruised past to take the bracelet. 2012 saw Monnette make it back-to-back bracelet wins, this time by emerging victorious in the $5,000 Seven Card Stud event for $190,826.

Most recently, the American claimed his third WSOP bracelet by taking down the 2017 $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw event where he bagged $256,610. The first bracelet won since being with his wife Diana, he credits her influence for changing his dynamic whilst playing. Monnette had picked up the nickname ‘Angry John’ at the tables for his frequent outbursts and tirades in his early days, but now attributes her for bringing about a calmer demeanour in him: ‘I’m not so angry anymore. And I thank her almost every day for that’.

With over $2,300,000 in earnings from the WSOP alone, the majority of John’s live tournament earnings come from this series of events. However, he’s also distinguished himself as a talent online playing under the name ‘jmonnett’ on PokerStars. He has claimed both a SCOOP title and a WCOOP title – the former in a 2-7 Triple Draw event and the latter in a Fixed Limit Badugi tournament.

Since Black Friday, John has focused his attention solely on the live circuit but has been known to partake in cash-games alongside tournaments. If his WSOP results are anything to go by, it’s likely that he crushes the mixed-game cash tables as well.
