Much better known by his nickname „Nacho“, the Argentinean Jose Ignacio Barbero certainly left his trace on the live poker scene. Born on February 15 1982, he was playing cards competitively since his young age, only not poker, but Magic: The Gathering. He excelled so much in this game that he was actually a part of Argentinean National Team in the Magic tournaments. It was during these events that he found out about poker and soon he deposited some of his winnings coming from the Magic National Championship victory to an online poker site. His natural talent made it possible for him to quickly move through the online ranks, from the low stakes cash games to high buyin tournaments.
Online, he is known by his aliases “joseba” and “jozzeb”, and Pocketfives list his online scores at $230,000, with the biggest cash in a single event being nearly $25k, coming from his 5th place finish in the Super Tuesday during 2008.
As for his live efforts, he started off playing cash games, as Argentina did not offer much in terms of tournaments. But soon after building big enough roll, he started traveling the live circuit to compete in some of the biggest events that were offered. The first results came during 2005, after winning Rendez Vous a Paris event for $23,000 and coming 2nd in the Barcelona Open tournament for another $33,700. With some more results in between, it wasn’t before 2010 that his career truly exploded. First came the victory in LAPT Punta del Este event good for nearly $280,000, followed by another LAPT title from Lima, worth another $250,000. The October of the same year saw him make the biggest score of his career, when he took down EPT London High Roller Event for $870,000. His more recent results include 5th place finish in the 2013 WSOP Shootout event, netting him just shy of $68,000 as well as the runner up finish in the Open Face Chinese Poker tournament for which he took home $47,000 and change. Jose “Nacho” Barbero’s overall winnings are in excess of $2.5 million.
After his successes and being ranked number 1 on the Argentina All Time Money List, Barbero was signed by Poker Stars as the member of the Team Pro. He says it is a great honor for him to be able to represent his country at some of the biggest events worldwide, and as an ambassador of poker, he is truly doing a great job. He is a kind of figure that young, aspiring poker players like to look up to. He is now known as “nachobarbero” on the Poker Stars international site and “nachoFR” on Pokerstars.fr. There are quite a few tournaments featuring appearance of Nacho Barbero that can be watched here on Pokertube.com.
