Born and raised in New Jersey, Matthew Stout began playing poker as a child at the age of just four. The American would enjoy playing Five-Card Draw with his brothers and sisters, seemingly laying the foundations for what was to be a future in cards for Stout. Although he technically didn’t deliberately drop out of college to pursue poker, some administrative errors and timely coincidences saw it happen. As he explained in a 2013 interview:

‘Long story short, a missing signature on some financial paperwork meant that the college didn’t get my tuition money and they decided to unregister me for all of my spring semester classes . . . I wound up finishing second in a WSOP Circuit event for $32,000. Before long, my bankroll was up to $70,000. Given my results, even my parents encouraged me to extend my hiatus from school’.

To this day, Matthew is still enjoying this hiatus from education as he crushes at the poker tables. He’s picked up more than $3.5 million in live tournament winnings and a similar amount playing online. He might just be one of the most talented players to have never won a bracelet – and it’s not without trying. Stout reached a WSOP final table every year between 2011 and 2014, getting closer to the gold each time. In 2011, he finished eighth at the $1,500 NLH event. The following year, he came third at the $1,000 NLH event. In 2013, Matt came agonisingly close to victory when he got down to heads-up at the $3,000 Nlh 6-Handed event. Considering that Erik Seidel, Nick Schulman, Benjamin Pollak, David Pham and Matt Berkey were among those seated at the final two tables, Stout’s deep run was all the more impressive. Unfortunately, German talent Martin Finger was the man to end the American’s dream of winning WSOP gold on this occasion as he finished as the runner-up for $313,370.

In spite of these bittersweet moments, the New Jersey native has still managed to claim a number of live tournament titles. These include a WSOP Circuit ring in 2008 and two WPT wins more recently in 2015 and 2017.

Best known by his alias ‘all_in_at420’ on PokerStars, Matthew has garnered $2,200,000+ in MTT earnings at this site alone. He reached an all-time high of 36th on the PocketFives tournament leaderboard in 2010 following a number of significant cashes including a Sunday 500 win and a plethora of deep SCOOP and FTOPS runs. Though Black Friday did interrupt his ability to play online, Stout has made it work by putting the volume in whilst he is travelling internationally for live tournaments.

Outside of playing poker, Stout also enjoys coaching it. In 2014, he set up the CSOP – the Charity Series of Poker which is a non-profit founded to promote charity poker tournaments and raise money for worthy causes.

Although Stout is realistic about the changing landscape of poker in recent years, he’s expressed his commitment to it for now:

‘I’m still confident I can still make a living playing this game, so that’s what I’ll continue to do’.
