If you thought Doyle Brunson was the oldest man in the world to pit his wits in the world of poker and gambling, think again! A Rutgers University study of online gambling in New Jersey has pinpointed a 110-year old punter who is ‘Texas Dolly’ Brunson’s number of years older than the average gambler in the state!

The supercentenarian wasn’t named in the report which broke down the New Jersey online gambling community into a dozen or more categories including age, gender, online habits, and how much gamblers spent, won and lost also threw up an amazing stat…

One player wagered a staggering $20.4 million in 2015, the year which the study focussed on, and New Jersey’s 3rd year of regulated online gambling – covering sites such as PokerStars NJ, BWin, 888 and their partnered casinos such as the Borgata, Golden Nugget and Tropicana.

Gambling age is coming down

The results make for interesting reading, with the average age coming down slightly from the previous year, from 39 to 38, despite the inclusion of the 110-year old punter – the previous year’s oldest being a youthful 98 years old.

People and Things which are 110 years old in the news today…

With a third of all online gamblers in state falling into the 25-34 age group and a mere 4% in the pensioner bracket, Rutger’s Center for Gambling Studies found that:

“There were significantly more gamblers than expected in the 21 to 24 year age category as well as in the 25 to 34 age group compared to those the year before”.

$billions wagered by New Jersey high-rollers

With a total of more than $2.7billion wagered on the state’s online gambling sites, the operators dragged in a profit of almost $150million, an average ‘rake’ of 18%, with the top 10% of players responsible for some 55% of the $2.7 billion in bets.

The 10% of high-rollers bet an average of $521,776 with the $20million+ gambler included in the stats, although the previous year’s single biggest gambler apparently getting through almost $79milllion in online bets – although it’s unclear if this was the same high-roller both years.

Women top the high-roller list

Interestingly, female gamblers were in the majority among the high-rolling online gamblers – a 51.8 to 48.2 percent female to male ratio despite the 2.5:1 male to female dominance across the entire NJ online spectrum. This figure compares to a 4%-5% number consistently given for female poker players in live poker events.
