âArm the Teachersâ Says Doyle Brunson as Pros React to School Shooting
6 years ago16 Feb
The Parkland school shooting in Florida which has so far claimed the lives of 17 people was the main focus of the poker worldâs Twitter users, with Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson, Cate Hall and a host of other players sharing their thoughts, prayers, anger and proposed solutions after the 18th gun incident of the year in US schools.
The shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, near Fort Lauderdale, Florida was allegedly carried out by a recently-expelled student, 19-year old Nikolas Cruz, who opened fire with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, poker legend Doyle Brunson quickly picking up the âgun controlâ debate which rages after every such incident â as it did with the Vegas Mandalay Bay shooting late last year.
Negreanu and Brunson, of course, regularly butt heads when it comes to political and social affairs, Wednesdayâs tragic events leading gun-loving Brunson to call for teachers to be armed, the Canadian as ever picking him up on the subjectâŚ
As ever in the poker Twittersphere, when things get political the same faces appear, Cate Hall on the side of the âliberalsâ and James Woods (the actor-turned-poker player) on the side of, well, anything from the GOP to the KKK judging by what he allows on his Twitter pageâŚ
Romanian-born Californian and 10 times WSOP bracelet winner Valentin Vornicu had his own take on the raging debate over gun control, a barbed tweet at those who believe in the 2nd Amendment constitutional right to âbear armsââŚ
âŚwhile âKidPokerâ was taking issue with the âthoughts and prayersâ brigade which was led by President Donald Trump yesterdayâŚ
Justin Bonomo and Dan OâBrien had a pretty strange discussion on the ins and outs of defending against school shootingsâŚ
âŚwhile Brunson was getting a bit tired of the endless and polarised debateâŚ
âŚwhereas Negreanu was just getting started it seemed, and likely to be on the receiving end of a few comments overnight as he brought the politicisation of the media into the discussionâŚ
