Doyle Brunson swapped his seat at the high stakes poker table for a hospital bed recently after catching pneumonia, the 88-year-old “Godfather of Poker” tweeting out his winter woes...

The 10-time WSOP bracelet winner had just finished filming for the new series of High Stakes Poker when the bad case of lung infection struck.

Daniel Negreanu replied to Doyle’s tweet with:

“I knew it was bad. You looked rough but that didn’t stop you from being a trooper and finishing the session.”

Although Doyle has officially retired from poker, he still plays when the mood takes him, turning up for an unexpected appearance at this year’s WSOP.

Doyle rocked up to play the Super Seniors event, busting out against pocket aces about an hour in, and then he played the Main Event – his first appearance in the iconic event since 2013.

Having won the event twice himself back-to-back in 1976 and 1977, Doyle and his Twitter fans were having fun discussing the possibility of a hattrick.

It wasn’t to be, though, as although the legendary Texas Dolly made his way through day one, he didn’t make it any further, busting out on day two.

Doyle’s current battle with pneumonia isn’t the first health scare he has had, battling with cancer and a number of other serious issues.

Age doesn’t arrive alone, however, and in 2019 he was feeling every year of it, tweeting:

“Still not sure I'm ever going to get over this "bug" or whatever it is. If it's going to take me out, I wish it would hurry.”

Last year it was the Covid-19 pandemic that was across the table from Doyle, though it wasn’t his own health that was a concern.

“I'm in a self-quarantine mode,” he explained, adding: “The Corona can't touch me, I've been robbed at gunpoint 5 times, been stabbed, beat cancer 3 times and survived 3 car wrecks. But I don't want to infect my wife, she is too dear to me to take a chance.”

Here’s hoping that Doyle gets over his current illness soon and if you’re wondering who Doyle and Daniel were battling with on HSP, which will be on your screens sometime in the new year, check out this line-up below!
