Everyone Wants James Gunn's The Suicide Squad Poker Chip Set

Suicide Squad director James Gunn took to Twitter this week to reveal some of the characters involved in his upcoming reboot of the cult movie – with John Cena and himself featuring on poker chips, and the fans desperate for some of their own!

The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker has turned his attention to re-doing the 2016 movie that was panned by critics, and he has the likes of Idris Elba, Margot Robbie and John Cena to work with.

Cena’s character, ‘Peacemaker’, gets star billing on one of the poker chips, worth a devilish $666, while Gunn himself is pictured on the other as ‘Jackpot’.

The values of the chips make it likely they are just memorabilia for the cast and crew, but it didn’t stop fans begging to be able to buy some for themselves. Among the ‘gimme please’ tweets were a few worth noting:

• Can’t wait to see Harley and King Shark poker chips.
• Does that mean you’re going to play a part or make a cameo? That’d be pretty sick.
• Now I want the poker chips as collectible tokens. Normally this wouldn't be a me thing, but I admit, the James Gunn one has merit. But then I like the Peacemaker one as it's awesome with the colours.

There’s a slim chance that poker plays any part in the upcoming movie – due for cinematic release on August 6th, 2021 – with the synopsis revealing what lies in store for the motley crew of supervillains.

“Welcome to hell – AKA Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst supervillains are kept and where they will do anything to get out – even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and everyone’s favourite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. As always, one wrong move and they’re dead.”

No sound of chips being riffled in that storyline, then, but if they do get a full set made of the main characters, the cast and crew can certainly run their own fancy home game.
