Betting on the World Series of Poker takes many forms, but players offering odds on themselves to land a bracelet or two (or even three!) seems to be the in thing as this year’s WSOP gets underway. Poker pros with faith in their ability do it all the time – and Jason Mercier obviously has a lot of faith in himself, offering 3-1 to anyone fancying a flutter.

At least, that was last weeks’ price!

On May 31st the 29-year old Floridian tweeted:

Fast-forward one week and the Team PokerStars-sponsored pro had changed his tune a little.

And he had plenty of willing takers it would seem, despite the $1K minimum, a figure which would see him pay out $2700 every min. bet if his WSOP ends up without and gold-ware adorning his wrists!

It’s not as though Mercier can’t afford to take a big hit, of course, with $16.5 million worth of live tournament cashes to-date – and you can add in the sponsorship, cash games and online earnings he makes as a star of the modern game.

Last year’s WSOP saw Mercier win his third gold bracelet but still come out a loser as he had a huge side-bat on with fellow high-stakes pro Brian Hastings, who himself had offered 3.3-1 against him winning a bracelet. He did, and Mercier had to pay out a massive sum, though the exact number isn’t public knowledge!

The WSOP is always a happy-hunting ground for anyone looking to make a wager – basically any amount, on anything, and you’ll get action!

One of the most keenly-watched side-bets this year is that made by Vanessa Selbst and WSOP first-timer Dzmitry Urbanovich, Selbst facing a $2million dent in her fortune should the young Pole land three bracelets this summer – a tough ask for his debut, but two million reasons to give it a go!

200-1 were the odds offered by Selbst, who claims she has a plan B in place should the youngster get anywhere near his goal of three big wins. As usual in such cases, selling off pieces of the action will lower the eventual ‘bill’ should the unthinkable occur, although with Urbanovich’s undoubted skill it is more just unlikely than unthinkable!

Not all such bets or offers are equally welcome, however, with last year’s Jason Mo offer to short-sell two fellow pros being considered at least cheeky, at worst offensive.

Mo, a loud and brash member of the ‘Evil Empire’ crew which includes Doug Polk and Ryan Fee, was basically saying that Matt Stout and Faraz Jaka weren’t worth the 7% they were offering on themselves in the One Drop High Roller – although Mo insists it was just a simple ‘business proposition rather than anything personal. Hmmm. Given Mo’s trolling contempt for many fellow players, we can take that with a pinch of salt!

So, with the WSOP set to run for a good few weeks yet, you can expect to see and hear about a lot more of these expensive but fun side-bets, and plenty of unusual prop-bets thrown in for good measure!

Rest assured, the biggest bets, best prices and the most outrageous ones will be covered by us here at PokerTube.
