Joe McKeehen's Angry Tirade
8 years ago01 Apr
Last yearâs WSOP Main Event winner, Joe McKeehen, has launched an astonishing attack on the media, claiming that they are responsible for the earlier start times for many of this yearâs events.
The 24-year old Pennsylvanian, who took down $7,683,346 for his post-to-post victory in November, claimed that poker players âhave been getting sh-t on because of the media ever since I started playing live poker.â
McKeehen took to his Twitter account to announce his disgust at the 11am start times, spewing:
The fact the media has ANY say or impact on the players and how the tournament is ran is a fâking joke.â
He continued his verbal assault by stating that:
They have nothing to do with how the tournament is played, they just report it, and 90 percent of them clearly donât even try."
His tirade was met with incredulity by most players and fans of the game, Daniel Negreanu responding:
âI can tell you with absolute certainty that the media had absolutely nothing to do with it,â Negreanu said. âWhat do you claim to know that I donât? I was involved internally and am telling you media had nothing at all to do with it.â;
It is âobscene to assume that media wasn't even a slight consideration,â replied McKeehen, tweeting under the namedude904, who then proceeded to involve himself in various Twitter spats with members of the poker media.
IBus Mediaâs Matt Parvis tweeted that, âIâve been working the WSOP for 10 years and I, nor anyone I know, have ever âlobbiedâ for start time changes,â and their exchange eventually saw McKeehen tweet, âcool, i'm a player, and if morons like you went away the game would be much more enjoyable for most of us.â Not too charming.
Negreanu and the majority of othersâ views were supported by WSOP spokesman Seth Palansky, who explained that seven of last yearâs 68 WSOP events actually began at 10am, and also refuted McKeehenâs claim that âin a city that never sleeps (Vegas) itâs going to cause many [people] to skip events.â
âThe simple math shows the two hour earlier start (10 a.m. from typical 12 noon in 2015) had no issues getting players there,â Palansky told CardPlayer.com.
This information, combined with additional player feedback on long playing days, was the impetus for the tweak, moving 12 noon events to an 11 a.m. start time in 2016. Of course, we will keep several 10 a.m. starting events on the schedule too, as they proved plenty successful.â
In addition to the official responses, posters on 2+2 were also upset by the championâs assault, particularly as McKeehen likened the WSOP players to âslavesâ when responding to RabitowitzDarrenRabbi who said, âits amazing to me that people don't understand it's a significant change.â
Of course it is,â replied McKeehen, âbut since we're all slaves to them anyway it doesn't really matter."
This provoked some expected responses from the forumites, with âphilepistemerâ writing:
"Comparing any poker player who isn't being held in a basement by the triads to a slave is a little ****ed up,â clearly an in-joke reference to Tom âdurrrrâ Dwan, while âBadlyBeatenâ added the burn comment: âLOL at dude who binks the ME and thinks his opinions now matter.â
The response from âzigiâ summed up the majority opinion, however, when he wrote:
I know grinding those tourneys is exhausting and tough, but he have the choice not to play or skip some tourneys. Many people don't have that choice and have jobs with longer hours and way more exhausting then pro-poker players who are blessed to make money with a hobby. No reason to complain Joe.â
