In a re-branding exercise across its many different interests, Amaya have re-designed their PokerStars logo, a logo which has long been synonymous with online poker.

For many years players and fans alike have become accustomed to the ‘O’ in PokerStars being replaced by a red spade, with a start centred within it – but starting this week the company has decided to dispense with the clever positioning of their iconic symbol, and merely have it sitting between the Poker and Stars.

The new logo will ensure a consistent appearance across the various 'Stars' brands (e.g. PokerStars, BetStars, StarsDraft) now and in the future,” explained a company spokesperson yesterday.

The new logo was first seen in TV commercials featuring PokerStars ‘golden boy’ Cristiano Ronaldo, to advertise the special edition Spin & Go’s which have become one of the most popular versions of online poker played today.

The Spokesperson stated:

The new PokerStars logo is being phased in from January 1, and the old logo should be completely phased out across the business by the end of March.”

The new logo has already appeared on the PokerStars website, and although the StarsDraft version is yet to surface (Stars Draft being Amaya’s version of the Daily Fantasy Sports sites which have been much in the news and media this year) the BetDraft version is already in place.

BetDraft is the sports betting site of the Canadian entertainment giants, and their new logo features a red football with the white star inside it, a play on the popular PokerStars spade and star. The DFS version will doubtless follow this theme.

The re-branding comes at a time when Amaya have introduced many changes to their industry leading poker site; changes which have sparked outcry and endless debate within the poker community.

Moving away from the traditional ‘poker-pro focus’ of their long and interesting history, the use of the likes of soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo and the new logos represent a move towards a more recreational-friendly approach to their gaming interests.

I always bring the intensity, flair, and determination I show on the football pitch to the poker tables,” stated Ronaldo when he joined the PokerStarsSports team, adding, “I love the game, and I’ve always loved the challenge of beating my opponents one-on-one. By joining the world’s biggest poker site, I can test my skills against the game’s best players and become one of them.”

Despite Ronaldo drawing new fans to the game, several top pros have come out publicly against the new approach, with England’s Victoria Coren resigning her position in the PokerStarsPro team when the initial changes were announced late last year.

Just this week, Isaac ‘Ike’ Haxton, one of the most successful online PokerStars players also decided not to renew his contract in light of the ‘dumbing-down’ of the site’s poker approach, stating “I believe PokerStars is behaving unethically”, his reference to their decision not to honour certain VIP privileges for the forth-coming year.

With the re-branding and the new logo signaling the start of a new era for the Poker and online gambling giants, it will be interesting to see what comes next in the ongoing tale of Amaya and PokerStars.
