Earlier in December, state of New York approved new casinos for the Catskills, Schenectady and the Finger Lakes region, but the gaming regulators just picked three winners for the casinos. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo asked the state to reopen bidding for the casinos in the Southern Tier.

In a letter, sent on Friday to the Gaming Commission and its location board, Andrew Cuomo said that authorities should start a process to award the fourth license.

Indeed, as this would be the last license issued in New York State, it may excite national competition by interested parties that submit even better applications than the first round. If you agree to this request, the (casino board) should quickly establish a process for the fourth license that could be complete as expeditiously as possible, as the Southern Tier needs jobs and investment now. Andrew Cuomo’s letter will probably influence Gaming Commission because it is under the Cuomo’s authority as a state agency. The letter was written to Mark Gearan, president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the Finger Lakes and the spokesman of the Gaming Commission, Lee Park, said that they have received the letter and that they were reviewing it.

The pressure from the local leaders increased after two casino applicants in the Southern Tier, Tioga Downs in Nichols and Traditions Resorts in the Town of Union, Broome County, didn't get a license. Andrew said that the Southern Tier economic is their priority even though he had doubts whether the region would benefit from the casino. In the letter, Governor wrote about how the region needs a good investment and people in the Southern Tier need jobs.

The Senator Thomas Libous said he is very pleased that Andrew Cuomo is fighting for the casino and he is hoping that Gaming Commission will reopen the process for the fourth license in the Southern Tier. Governor’s plan is to put the similar focus on the Southern Tier as he has put on the Buffalo earlier and the region received a $1 billion investment from the state.

If the Gaming Commission reopens the process, it will lead to stronger bids and more applicants.

I am requesting the (casino board) consider approving a new bidding process for Region Five with the hope that a qualified applicant will come forward to site a casino with the fourth available license in the true Southern Tier. Andrew Cuomo, www.pressconnects.com;

The board spokesman said that they will review the Andrew’s request and the Gaming Facility Location Board will decide whether the Southern Tier will receive a fourth and the final license to build a casino.
