The titles and money have been flying all over the place this week as the PokerStars Championship in Barcelona draws to a close, and yesterday saw 2013 WSOP Main Event champion Ryan Riess grab his share of the spoils, taking down the €10K 8-max event for €155,500 ($184,104).
The 59-player field produced a prizefund of €572,300 ($677,575) and if it produced a final table of lesser-known names, a quick check of the Hendon Mob site reveals some $10million+ in earnings between them – not including Riess’ own $10million+ in tournament cashes.
While the likes of Sweden’s Sebastian Sorensson was lifting a cool $million paycheck for scooping the Main Event, and celebrity stars DJ Zedd and footballer Gerard Pique were making splashes of their own, Riess was battling to find the form which had seen him take down the $10K WPT Seminole Hard Rock title and $716,000 back in April.
His quiet summer of, mainly small WSOP cashes, had continued in Barcelona with a min. cash in the €2K event earlier in the week, but the 8-max single re-entry €10K tournament seemed to re-ignite the young Michigan man’s talent.
Describing his victory as a “trip saver” it was a proud Riess who tweeted news of his title to fans and followers…
…perhaps finally taking his own advice along the way…
Riess’ Main Event victory 4 years ago was a life-changer for the then just-turned 23-year old, almost instantly $8.4million wealthier when he defeated Jay Farber heads-up, the final table also notable for featuring the first of Mark Newhouse’s back-to-back 9th place finishes.
For Riess, who in the past admitted to having a ‘pit games problem’, hopefully this week’s win will see him back on the path to future successes.
