Ryan Riess Wins Seminole Hardrock Main Event
7 years ago08 AprRyan Riess should really be re-named ‘Big Slick’, the 2013 WSOP Main Event winner producing yet another Ace-King of hearts to take down the WPT Main Event and scoop $716,088.
The 26-year old Michigan pro burst onto the scene only 4 and a half years ago, but his incredible run in his first ever WSOP Main Event brought him riches beyond belief when his ‘Big Slick’ holding finally finished off Jay Farber heads-up, giving the Hospitality Business graduate $8,361,570 reasons to be, well, hospitable!
Yesterday’s huge win saw Riess overcome a field of 349 players in the $10K buy-in event at Hollywood, Florida’s Seminole HardRock Hotel and Casino – a field which featured big names such as high-roller specialist Charlie Carrel from England, last year’s ‘November Niner’ Cliff Josephy and Ukraine’s Yevgeniy Timoshenko, who was in the news earlier this week as he went to court to reclaim a $90K debt owed by a former housemate!
Before the start of play at the final table Riess had set his goals on Twitter…

…but the final table of six looked for a long time to be a stomping ground for chip leader Alan Sternberg, who dispatched Josephy in 6th spot. Riess closed the gap, however, when he got rid of fellow American Tim West and also relative newbie Terry Schumacher, the Belgian hopeful who’s $half-million lifetime earnings have come almost entirely from this year alone.
Just as Riess had done back in 2013’s electrifying Main Event victory in Las Vegas, so once again ‘big slick’ proved to be the defining victory hand – this time over 100 hands of heads-up play seeing it all come down to a classic coin-flip when Sternberg tabled pocket 7’s against Riess’ A♥K♥.
The K♣ 6♦ 6♠flop saw Sternberg looking for a 2-outer, but when the turn fell the K♦ it was game over, and a triumphant Riess was back on Twitter to share the love…
Thanks for all of the love everyone! It will take me a little time to respond to everyone individually but I love you guys to death #blessed
