Top 5 Reasons You're Losing at Poker
7 years ago12 Apr
Daniel Negreanu reveals why you might be losing at poker, listing five of the likeliest reasons that bankroll may be dwindling.
Of course, we all have bad luck from time to time. Just listen to the never-ending bad beat stories on poker forums and at the tables. But if you're total number of hands played is over 1,000 and you can't seem to show a profit, DNegs suggests to stop leaning on bad luck as an excuse and to take a look at the other four reasons.
Table Selection and Predictability
Becoming too predictable and playing in games that are too difficult are two more reasons for losing mentioned by KidPoker. Are you losing to players you used to beat regularly? Are you aware that the players seated among you are quite good, perhaps better than you?
If you answered yes to the first question, your opponents may have caught on to your game and can read you like a book. It might be time to mix things up a bit.
With regard to the second question, if you know that you're not among the best at the table, it certainly makes sense to find a table that affords a better chance of winning. We all want to move up in stakes, but if you feel like you don't match up to your tablemates, you're in the wrong place and likely to lose.
Fundamentals and Tilt
Got to have those fundamentals down if you want to win. Your position on each hand, starting hand strength, and knowing the math or odds in given situations are all fundamental elements to the game of poker.
Daniel's top reason for why you may be losing - going on tilt. Yes, it happens to the best of them and may be happening to you if you're not aware and cognizant of what is going on around you.
Getting angry at the play of others and chasing losses are two kinds of tilt that can spiral out of control and disrupt your decision-making process. If you don't become more aware of the situation and act accordingly - perhaps even stop playing - the losses may continue to mount.
Can Negreanu practice what he preaches? Let's see how he reacts when his opponent catches a gut shot straight.
