Global Poker Tours Ltd announced today that the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) would expand its presence in Australia by incorporating the Australia and New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT) thereby creating an international tour.

Already the region’s biggest and most lucrative tour, the APPT Season 10 will expand to include all the former ANZPT events as of 2016, making next month’s Melbourne event the last to be run under ANZPT auspices.

Last year’s Main Event in Melbourne attracted a record 516 entries producing a $1million prize-fund and organisers say that indications so far suggest this will again be beaten when the competition starts on October 8th.

Speaking of the announcement by the APPT, President Danny McDonagh of the ANZPT said,

“I hope ANZPT Melbourne at the fabulous Crown Melbourne complex can set a new prize-pool record as ANZPT's final event, beating the million dollar prize pool achieved just last season.”

McDonagh also spoke of the history and legacy of his organisation, stating,

“I have been very proud to be a part of the ANZPT. There have been many memorable stops including Darwin, Gold Coast and Queenstown together with the big city venues such as Sydney and Melbourne. The tour has preserved the freeze out format in the $2,000 range, a decision vindicated by how popular the series has been with players”.

The opening event of the newly-expanded APPT season will be the famous $10,600 buy-in Aussie Millions event, running from January 13th until February 1st, once again at the Crowne Melbourne. Reigning champion is Manny Stavropoulos who lifted $1,385,000 and the title last year at the most prestigious event in the southern hemisphere.
