When Scott Overfield decided to take a punt on the DraftKings fantasy football league last Monday, most people would have placed the chances of his $82 bet coming good at close to zero.

After all, the Lawrence-resident confesses “I don’t watch football a lot,” and is unable to even name 10 players in the NFL! That didn’t stop the 50-year old from running up his small bet to a staggering $438,000 having putting together his winning team by simply looking at the average scores for players.

Come Monday night he had been e-mailed several times by the DraftKings crew to appear on their Monday night “Sweat Show”, where DFS players in contention for the big million-dollar prizes chat with the show’s host during “Monday Night Football” game.

By the start of the Monday night game, his previous six games had already put him in line for a $38,000 payout, but if the Cincinnati Bengals offense were to do the business, he might just turn that very decent sum into a life-changing amount.

Overfield had Bengals receiver Marvin Jones and tight end Tyler Eifert in his fantasy team, but the other DFS contenders either had no-one, or the Bengals defense only.

The ‘Sweat Show’ amounted to exactly that, as the Bengals proceeded to have one of their worst showings so far.

I thought there was no way I wasn’t going to hit first place,” said Overfield, before adding “Of course, then the Bengals had to have their worst game ever.”

When Eifert dropped a pass, the newly-converted DFS aficiondo joked " They’re bringing me oxygen at this point and time!” while watching the game at the 23rd Street Brewery in Lawrence.

Trailing 6-10 with 3 minutes, 54 seconds left to play, it looked as though the new grandfather would have to be happy with the lesser –though still major – $38,000.

I was up to $138,000 at the two-minute warning,” said Overfield. “And then Eifert decided to start catching the ball at that point and time. And every time he caught the ball, my money went up $100,000. I got $300,000 the last two minutes of the game. All he had to do was make it into the end zone.”

The $1,000,000 jackpot was within his grasp when the Bengals got to the 33-yard line, but it wasn’t to be, and Overfield had to settle for $438,000. “It’s so surreal,” said the man who sold his security business back in May. “I thought that can’t be real money.”

With a son in high school making plans for college, and a daughter who has recently presented him with a grandchild, the money will go a long way to helping out.

It’s close to winning the lottery” he stated enthusiastically. “I was nine points away from winning the lottery!” before adding, “I was looking to go back to work in some capacity, but now I can wait a while.”

The self-confessed electronics geek - “I’m not a sports fanatic to say the least” – also plays in a regular fantasy football league with his cousin, and readers might be stunned to know that his team there are 3-7 this season. On DraftKings, however, he is now a bit of a legend!
