Martin Jacobson is a professional poker player from Sweden and the winner of the 45th annual World Series of Poker Main Event.

Martin Jacobson was born in Stockholm in 1987 and from an early age aspired to be a professional chef. At the age of 18, he was planning to move to Barcelona and work his way up through the ranks, eventually hoping to be the chef of a three-star Michelin restaurant. Unfortunately the job offer he had been waiting on never materialized. He discovered poker the same year though, after seeing it on television. Once his chef dream slowed, he dedicated an increasingly large amount of his time to playing poker.

Small cash games were his primary focus at the start, but they never brought the real success that he had hoped for. Once he discovered single table tournaments, he found the niche that would turn his results around. One game started the trajectory that led him to WSOP victory when he played a satellite into the main event. He made it to the third hand before busting, but he was hooked on satellites from then on. This way he could compete in the large live events that he had seen on tv without spending $5k or more on the buy in.

One of those satellites was to the EPT Budapest in 2008. He took down the qualifier for the only prize package up for grabs and was on his way. In Budapest, he finished third for 280k and gained his first live cash. Compared to previous years, 2008 was his most profitable, but the next few years brought even more results and showed just how well he could perform under the pressure of live tournaments on the EPT and WSOP circuits.

In 2009, he won $36k in a $1k Mega Stack at the WSOP, 42k in the 5k EPT Grand Finale, and 238k at WPT Venice. In 2010 he came even closer to winning the same $1k Mega Stack and took home $183k and was runner-up at EPT Vilamoura’s Main Event for 300k. His EPT results from 2009-2010 were responsible for earning him both the Online Qualifier of The Year title from EPT as well as making it to the top of their Player of the Year leaderboard.

WSOP success was consistent, although not as profitable was the international tours. That changed in 2013, however, when he made the final table of the $111,111 One Drop High Roller and took home $807k. The next year, he made it to the Final Table of the Main Event. For much of the last leg, he was the short stack table. While others at the table took time off to relax, Jacobson went to work and spent four months focusing on his game, as well as the game of everyone he would be playing against. Commentators time and time again said that if he could accumulate more chips, he would be the most feared player at the table. Sure enough, he started climbing and was soon the chip leader. At heads up play with Felix Stephenson, he turned pocket tens into a score of $10 million and joined the ranks of some of the most legendary players in history that have won the World Series of Poker Main Event.

Since that score he has had consistent tournament cashes, although his Main Event win has overshadowed most of them. No matter the size of the win, though, he is setting an example as a member of Raising For Effective Giving, donating a percentage of all winnings to charity.
