Paul "The Main Event" Volpe

Paul Volpe also known as "The Main Even" was an online sensation that became a live tournament all time best player. Learn more about him at PokerTube

It is hardly a surprise these days when an online wizard comes out to the live tournament circuit and starts making some noise with his results. Paul Volpe is one of these people.

Born in 1981 in Pennsylvania, he started his career by making noticeable cashes on the Internet, playing under the alias “paulgees81”. Although he was making more than a decent living for himself, it was not until quite recently that he has come under the lame-light, especially with his 20th place finish in the 2012 WSOP Main Event. Although the cash itself was not that big in terms of poker money, “only” tad under $300,000, this run earned him the nickname “The Main Event”.

As fate would want it, this was only the beginning of very successful showing for Paul Volpe. In February of 2013 he missed the win by one, finishing runner up in L.A. Poker Classic, an event he decided to play at the last minute, banking $650,000 and went on to finish 3rd in the WPT Shooting Stars event to the tune of $435,000.

These, combined with other cashes, including the win in the 6-max event of the EPT Monte Carlo, put his overall tournament winnings well over $2 million. His online earnings are even better, amounting to $4.5 million. Amongst his many important online wins, the one that stand out is the 2013 SCOOP title in a Badugi event, beating Shaun Deeb heads up for total of nearly $35,000. Volpe says that it took some time and adjusting to successfully transfer to the live games after having so much success and experience online.

Some of the things he needed to change included lowering aggression and paying more attention to his tournament life. If his results are any indicator, these seemed to have worked nicely for him.

He was also a sponsored Lock Pro for a period of time, but decided to part ways with them when the room started experiencing problems and players having issues with cashing out their funds. Although he was just a sponsored player with the task of promoting the company without any insider knowledge about the financial status and the business, he felt like he was better off cutting his ties with the site, especially since he did not receive his sponsorship payment for over six months.

Although he is currently sitting at the 202nd position of the All Money List, his recent results as well as his online success are a good indicator that he would continue trending upwards in the coming years.

Global Poker Index has him at the 12th position as of this time, so he he will very likely be on the “ones to watch” list in the near future.
