After making a splash with his sartorial flare in last year’s July Nine John Hesp went from a quiet – relatively speaking – Yorkshire OAP to a 2.6 dollar-millionaire over the course of a long week in Vegas.

Before that his Twitter feed was largely updates, from three years ago, of his progress in Clash of Clans, an online social media game.

Now it’s photos of his Delorean and interviews with the poker press about whether he’ll be coming back for another shot at the biggest title in poker. The answer to that particular question, is a resounding yes. He confirmed he would be returning to defend his 4th place finish in a recent interview.

Since his last outing he’s been doing a bit of studying, reading the odd poker book but he has no intention of going pro, for him last year’s event was:

“Surreal, a dream. I was just having a ball". To which he added, “If I can replicate the pleasure and entertainment that I gained from playing in the Main Event last year, then every penny will be well spent.”

Perhaps though his attempts as studying might get in the way of another deep run after all, he theorised that it was his amateur nature that threw the pros off.

“I think it was my total ignorance of the whole mechanics of the game that enabled me to play a game that to some extent confused a lot of the top players,” he said.

One thing that is clear is that unlike other “personalities” that have made their name by making noise in the Main Event (I’m looking at you, Kassouf) people found themselves rooting for Hesp’s everyman qualities.

His everyman qualities, and of course, that technicoloured dream-coat.
