PokerStars fans will soon be seeing their favourite site advertised across the NBA’s TV and social media platforms after their parent company finalised a multi-year deal with the giants of basketball

Stars Group, the world’s leading online gambling company which includes PokerStars and BetStars among its brands, struck the deal to become only the second authorised gaming operator of the National Basketball Association in the US – and Stars’ first joint venture with a professional sports competition.

According to Matt Primeaux, senior Vice-President of US strategy and operations at the Stars Group:

“This agreement enables us to use official NBA data and league marks, providing a better experience to our customers, while working with the NBA to protect the integrity of games.”

The deal will also see Stars Group brands such as PokerStars promoted across the NBA's digital assets, which include NBA TV, NBA.com, the NBA app and social media platforms.

What it means for online poker players

As with any tie-in, the hope is that it will bring in new blood to the game of poker, 2018 statistics showing that the NBA has 36.64 million fans on Facebook alone according to statista.com, with the LA Lakers the top team boasting 21.52 million followers.

PokerStars will be hoping for some of those to give poker a go, although their BetStars brand is the most obvious reason for the deal.
