Phil Galfond’s much-anticipated online poker site, RunItOnce, is set to open this summer, with the launch will be split into two phases according to the latest word from the man himself, Galfond revealing ‘an update and a plan’ this week...

The long-heralded and much-needed addition to the online poker world has seen a few bumps along the road, but now Galfond believes he will have cash games on offer this summer in Phase 1 of his site’s launch, with a date yet to be set for Phase 2, which will mainly cover tournaments.

Galfond starts his update with an apology for missing the launch he’d promised, stating:

“You rallied behind us, you pledged your support, you were ready and waiting to play and, unfortunately, we missed our target,” he added.

His relative silence this past while, he says, is down to not wanting to let people down again, Galfond explaining:

“So I kept quiet, even once we chose our path, because after my experience with the first announcement, I didn’t want to make any promises that I couldn’t keep.”

The promises, however, are just over the horizon now – a 2-phase approach which Galfond describes as “a sped up launch, but a slightly slower path to our final product,” adding:

“We’ve come far enough on Phase 1 that we’ve just begun our private beta, which means I’m finally ready to announce a launch window.”

Phase 1 - Launching Summer 2018

Explaining the 2-part launch of what could quickly become the biggest challenge to the likes of PokerStars and partypoker, Glafond stated:

“We figured that you’d rather have something from us than to wait much longer for us to offer everything."

“Our Phase 1 platform will provide cash games,” he writes, stating that both he and his team have “built a product we’re proud of that will deliver on our vision and our values,” one of the reason for the cash games coming first being rather simple.

“We were furthest along on cash games, and even if we hadn't been, launching with tournaments only would be extremely challenging for a new site fighting for liquidity.”

With his team’s sights set on offering “the dream of poker as a career” among other things, RunItOnce will “set sensible rake for sustainable and beatable games” as well as providing “an innovative player rewards system”.

Although he plans on running “a fun and engaging environment that all types of players enjoy playing in”, Galfond also says that:

“A poker site should believe in fairness” and should also “seek to put a stop to predatory behavior and to cheating of any kind.”

Phase 2, obviously a bit further away from completion, will include:

  • An innovative Tournament experience
  • An awesome nosebleed stakes offering
  • A distinct SNG offering
  • General software enhancements and more user options

Galfond says:

“We’re as excited as we’ve ever been to play our part in pushing online poker in the right direction, and we’re doing everything we can to make it worth the wait.”
