Poker is a sociable game, and part of that camaraderie is the cracking of jokes at the table, but as Joe Stapleton’s recent tweet and responses point out, one man’s ‘funny’ poker sayings can make the rest of the table wince in pain..!

Daniel Negreanu, who always seems to be having a great time when he plays, was first to chip in with the regular ‘witticisms’ he likes least… an age-old nugget which never fails to raise no laughs…

Of course, ‘poker jokes’ themselves can be funny, as in the classic:

“What’s the difference between God and Phil Hellmuth? God doesn’t think he’s a Phil Hellmuth!”

A case of it’s funny ‘cos it’s true?

Recently-voted Poker Journalist of the Year 2017, Lance Bradley, has his own list of clichéd jokes which rarely manage to raise a titter…

…although he might prefer the following exchange…

Journo: “What will you do with the winnings?

Pro: “I will pay off some creditors first.”

Journo: “Cool. What will you do with the rest?

Pro: “They will just have to wait!”

…a proper joke if you will, rather than the tiring and repetitive ‘banter’ such as this…

Perhaps if the would-be comedians tried a bit harder, they might come up with something worth sharing with their tablemates…

“Some cowboys were playing poker in an Old West saloon. One of them laid down the winning hand, and another jumped up, yelling, 'He’s cheatin! He ain't playin the cards I dealt him!'”
