Nothing is ever simple when it comes to Englishman William Kassouf, and yesterday saw the mouthy Brit take down the EPT Prague High Roller title but leave with almost €200,000 less than the second-placed player, Canada’s Patrick Serda!

The rather bizarre deal, reminiscent of the earliest days of the WSOP when nobody wanted the gaze of the gambling world on them, saw Serda agree to a heads-up deal without playing a single hand. Serda wanted the lion’s share of the money (€719,000) while Kassouf was happy to take the title and the trophy (plus a not-so-shabby €532,500!).

The ever-popular Prague stop had seen almost every record being broken this year – the last-ever EPT as PokerStars plan their Championship and Festival replacements for almost every tour in Europe and beyond. This meant 407 players and 90 re-entries paying €10K per head, a massive prizefund of €3,947,900 awaiting the 55 lucky players who cashed – Ike ‘Hollywood’ Haxton being the bubble-boy.

Of course, when it comes to Kassouf there is always something more than just cards going on, the loud-mouthed Londoner being the subject of hundreds of articles since his antics at this summer’s Vegas WSOP – running deep in the Main Event but also running his mouth off and receiving several warnings and penalties for doing so.

This time around there were the usual grumblings about his table-talk ‘skills’, but unlike the ESPN-coverage of the massive blow-up between the Englishman and Griffin Benger, the Prague crowd seemed less-inclined to pull him up for his silliness – perhaps because it was Kassouf’s birthday!

He wasn’t completely quiet, of course, and joked “Thank you, Merry Christmas” when his AK hit runner-runner aces to take down a big pot, Kassouf joking “That’s just overkill!” to the dealer when the river hit. Love him or hate him, there’s now no doubt that Kassouf is a force to be reckoned with in big events, his ability to tilt the opposition second to none.

A €1600 satellite buy-in, a birthday present of the final EPT High Roller champion and €1/2 million and the distinction of most-talked-about Player of the Year to go with it! Merry Christmas indeed William Kassouf!
