Doug Polk Moves Stream To YouTube: Can't Compete With Somerville!
6 years ago20 May
A good poker player knows when he's beat, knows when to fold his hand and take his chances in a future hand where the odds of success may be greater.
Doug 'WCGRider' Polk knows this and has admitted defeat in the realm of poker streaming on Twitch, making the announcement to move the bulk of his streaming over to YouTube.
"I think that YouTube is best for my long-term goals and also the best to try and build an audience of people to watch the stream," Polk stated.
In so doing, Polk graciously bowed to the king of Twitch poker streaming, Jason Somerville, acknowledging a situation that finds 'JCarver' in an advantageous position on the streaming platform where it is unlikely that Somerville will ever be knocked off his throne in terms of viewership.
Why, Doug?
In a 14-minute spiel on YouTube that included graphs of streamers Somerville, Parker 'TonkaaaaP' Talbot, and Polk, WCGRider delves into all the reasons why he has come to this decision and why his fans and viewers can expect to see way less of him on Twitch and way more of him on YouTube. His reasoning and logic seem sound, which could be expected from a poker pro who has won millions of dollars.
Somerville had the benefits of first mover on the Twitch platform at a time when growth was encouraged, he has the backing of PokerStars, and his streams are listed in the top slot of the Twitch directory, Polk said. Also, viewers can only watch one stream at a time, making it much more likely that they will gravitate to the more popular offering.
Due to those reasons and more, Polk finds his streaming viewership declining rapidly when JCarver is in the house and is keen to stream on Twitch in the future only when Somerville is off doing something else.
"JCarver has built up a huge audience on Twitch that you're simply not able to compete with," Polk admitted. "If you're streaming on Twitch you have to make it a priority to not stream at the same time as JCarver or you're going to get straight wrecked."
Hello YouTube
Acquiescing to Somerville's dominance on Twitch, Polk will thus move his streaming operation to his YouTube channel and henceforth try to attract more players to the game of poker via that platform.
"There is no one streaming on YouTube," Polk said, eyeing an opportunity to perhaps be first mover as JCarver was able to do on Twitch.
WCGRider then talks a bit about money, insisting that revenue is not the main reason behind his decision to move to YouTube. He claims to "want to have a voice in poker," to build an audience, to have a community, and to see how far he can go in creating a lasting impression on poker players.
