David ‘ODB’ Baker

A graduate of Auburn University with a degree in Finance, Baker worked in sales for a number of years before transitioning to poker.

Not to be confused with the other David Baker who is also a poker pro and an American, the Texas resident is the older of the pair and has appropriately gained the nickname ODB – an acronym for Original David Baker. A graduate of Auburn University with a degree in Finance, Baker worked in sales for a number of years before transitioning to poker – it wasn’t until he was in his thirties that he made the move. A combination of finding his day-to-day job soul destroying and realising that he made more money playing cash games on casual poker trips than he did from his monthly wage, David officially began playing cards full-time in 2004. He recently reflected on the move in an interview, ‘When I started playing full-time, I was more than able to entirely replace the income I was making at my job. I didn’t like working a nine-to-five, but I loved being my own boss’.

Now with over $4,000,000 in live tournament earnings and likely more positive results at the cash tables that aren’t visible online, Baker has never regretted his decision to part with the sales job. He became a member of the poker elite after winning a WSOP bracelet in 2012 – a series where Baker enjoyed the run of a lifetime. Despite not cashing in any of the first 11 tournaments that he played, the proud father maintained a positive outlook and ended up making a total four final tables that amounted to almost $1,000,000 in earnings in less than a month. His bracelet came in the $2,500 8-Game Mix event, where David triumphed over fellow pro Greg Mueller to claim the $271,312 prize money. The summer saw him finish third in the $2,500 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw, fourth in the $3,000 PLO Hi/Lo 8-or-Better and sixth in the $10,000 NLH National Championship.

Baker’s list of tournament scores now boasts more than 60 WSOP cashes, making him a regular and respected face inside the walls of the Rio. He also frequently appears on the televised cash game show Poker Night In America where he has played alongside the likes of former WSOP Main Event winner Greg Merson and actress turned poker enthusiast Jennifer Tilly.
