Jaime and Matty Staples, the Twitch-streaming, poker-playing brothers, have won their incredible $150,000 prop bet challenge against billionaire amateur Bill Perkins, a year-long bet that most thought they had no chance of winning…
The live-streamed weigh in saw them tip the scales at exactly the same weight and the pair were overjoyed at what is an incredible achievement, Jaime losing 116lbs (52kg) while younger brother Matty gained a whopping 53lbs (25kg) the duo celebrating in style…
The amazing transformation of both young men has been keenly followed in the poker world and beyond, the challenge commencing a year ago as Jaime tweeted at the time…
With Jaime weighing in at a hefty 138kg (304lbs) when the prop bet was made, and brother Matty only tipping the scales at a paltry 61 kg (135lbs) the 50-1 odds Perkins offered seemed to be a little on the thin side, although Jaime himself stated that at 50-1 he'd take even more action "if he could".
What followed for Team Staples – whose following online has reached huge proportions – was a brutal regime, Jaime cutting out almost everything he liked to eat while Matty had to similarly exchange his diet for one which would turn his body into a hulking mass.
After a few false starts, and bringing in a personal trainer who helped them set up a diet and exercise plan…
…and by the start of this year it looked as though they might just manage to do the “impossible” as Doug Polk called it, Jaime almost unrecognisable a month and a half ago…
Many felt that brother Matty had the even harder challenge, turning his 60kg frame into something much more substantial to pull his weight in the challenge, a tweet from last November showing the ‘food grind’ he had to endure along the way…
A couple of weeks out and the stress of the final lap was starting to show, although Jaime being awarded the Poker Streamer of the Year title for 2017 was an excellent distraction for a few days. The pained face on Instagram, however, showed just how much winning the challenge meant to him….
With the weigh-in almost upon them, the brother were determined to see it through…
…with fans finally predicting a $150k victory for the pair, Perkins’ weigh-in representative and fellow Twitch streamer Jeff Gross running a poll with 24 hours to go which showed huge support for the brothers…
…with the scales being worn out in the run-up to ensure no mishaps…
Perkins himself seemed relatively untroubled by the money side of things, a $150,000 hit to the wallet mere pocket change to the billionaire hedge fund guru, Bill instead ‘inspired’ by the journey both men had been through over the past 12 months…
…so it’s a big bravo the Staples boys who earned every cent!
